Margeth was a forest witch who inhabited a secluded cottage in the woods outside Eastport, on the island of Farmarch. She is chiefly remembered as the caster of the Vegetable Curse of 1487 DR, which temporarily transformed the entire population of Eastport into sentient vegetation, and for a series of child abductions uncovered during the investigation that followed.

The Vegetable Curse

Margeth's cottage

During a celebratory feast in the summer of 1487 DR, Margeth wove a magical blight into the festivities that transformed the villagers of Eastport into plants and shrubbery. The adventurers later known as the Heroes of Eastport traced the blight to her forest cottage, where they also discovered evidence that she had been kidnapping children for purposes described in contemporary reports only as "evil deeds".

Death

Accounts of Margeth's end differ. Official town records state that she was vanquished in her forest hideout, lifting the curse. Journals kept by members of the party, however, maintain that she escaped the first confrontation by slipping into the shadows, and was finally destroyed only weeks later when she ambushed the group upon their return to Eastport [citation needed]. Eastport's town council has declined to reconcile the two versions, noting that the important thing is that everyone stopped being vegetables.

Legacy

Members of the party who fought her have suggested that Margeth was not acting entirely of her own will, and that something else was controlling her — a theory given weight by the corrupted blight she left behind in the forest, which local druid circles continue to investigate. Whether her patron was connected to the root-tattooed cultists of Ithak'var remains unproven, and the witch took whatever she knew into the shadows with her.
