The Vegetable Curse (embellished in later retellings as the Great Vegetable Curse) was a magical blight that struck the fishing village of Eastport in the summer of 1487 DR, temporarily transforming its entire populace into sentient plants and shrubbery. The curse was cast by the forest witch Margeth during a celebratory village feast and was lifted following her defeat at the hands of the adventurers subsequently dubbed the Heroes of Eastport.

Background

In the summer of 1487 DR, Eastport gathered for a celebratory feast, an occasion already notable for following an unusually eventful season that included a crash-landed airship and a cephalopod incident at the local lighthouse. Unknown to the villagers, the reclusive forest witch Margeth had woven a blight into the festivities, an act scholars attribute variously to an ancient grudge against the town, a dispute over foraging rights, or simple witchcraft-related mischief [citation needed].

The Transformation

The effects of the curse manifested during the feast itself. Witnesses describe villagers sprouting leaves mid-toast, fishermen taking root beside their nets, and at least one member of the town Watch continuing to issue patrol orders as an upright and unusually stern cabbage [citation needed]. The transformed villagers retained awareness and limited speech, resulting in what survivors describe as several days of low, rustling conversation throughout the town square.

No permanent injuries were recorded, though the period remains a sensitive subject among residents. The village motto, "We survive the weeds, mostly," is widely believed to have been adopted in reference to the event [citation needed].

Investigation and Lifting

The response to the crisis was staged from The Spotless Apple inn, one of the few locations whose occupants had escaped full transformation. The witch was confronted and slain in her forest hideout. Upon her death, the curse unraveled and the villagers reverted to their original forms, with reports of lingering side effects limited to seasonal leaf-shedding and a persistent craving for sunlight [citation needed].

Following the lifting of the curse, Mayor Duncan Wells officially declared the adventurers the Heroes of Eastport, commissioning commemorative t-shirts to mark the occasion.
