The Kestrel was a grand, luxury passenger airship designed to transport wealthy travelers, merchants, and adventurers across the Zendrian Sea and between the continents of Lyra. Run by a capable crew under Captain Volari at the helm and Tadrys managing the on-board bar, the vessel was celebrated for its mahogany decks, gold-trimmed fittings, and high-altitude stability.
In the summer of 1487 DR, The Kestrel departed from the port of Port Starvryn, carrying a diverse manifest of passengers, including the druid Brogmar Mossbeard, who had secured passage using a royal flyer from King Edor Braun of Marterus. The journey was intended to cross the sea and land in Marterus to investigate a newly uncovered ancient crypt.
Shortly after takeoff, the druid Brogmar Mossbeard shared a harvest of potent, mind-expanding mushrooms with several passengers in the airship's lounge. The incident, recorded in memoirs as the "High as a Kite" voyage, resulted in a vibrant, color-swirling trip that united several of the passengers into a cohesive group, though it drew suspicious stares from the sober crew.
Among the passengers was Groff, a dwarf warrior clad in heavy plate, and his equally untrustworthy companion. As the ship began experiencing sudden mechanical failures, Groff and his friend cowardly fled the vessel using a private emergency escape mechanism, earning them a permanent place of infamy in Brogmar's journals.
While passing over the island of Farmarch, The Kestrel suffered catastrophic engine failure. Captain Volari successfully guided the massive craft down to a rough but non-fatal crash-landing in the fields outside Eastport. The wreckage was left in the fields, and the stranded passengers were forced to seek shelter at The Spotless Apple inn.
