Greygate is an enormous stone wall running east to west across the southern road out of Marterus, together with the giant grey gate set into it and the small garrison town that shares their name. The wall marks the effective southern edge of patrolled Felldrei: beyond it lies the Fen, a swampy expanse of dead trees and standing water widely believed to be evil [citation needed].

The Wall and Gate

The wall is a massive stone construction of unknown age, cold to the touch and resistant to arcane inspection — a combination at least one visiting cleric found inexplicably compelling. The giant gate is not opened for ordinary traffic; travellers pass instead through a small portcullis beside it, escorted by guards partway down a long tunnel through the wall's thickness. Those exiting the southern door report a sudden change from cold stone to warm, humid air.

The Town

The settlement of Greygate exists almost entirely to garrison the wall, and offers a keep, barracks, and a quaint, quiet inn serving mid-strength ale and herbal tea. Notable residents include the guard Sam, who declined a dinner invitation from visiting adventurers on the grounds that he loves his job, and Fram — Frampton, called Peter by his friends — a reliable source on conditions beyond the wall.

The Fen

The land south of the wall is the Fen: swamp, mud, dead trees, and a damp heat at odds with the country behind the gate. Few patrols enter it and fewer adventurers, a statistic the garrison attributes to good sense. The Heroes of Eastport passed through the gate into the Fen in the winter of 1487 DR; the warlock Skaf from Yonder reportedly vanished from sight the moment the party crossed the threshold, which the remaining members chose to interpret as tactics.
