Maynard Krensch is the keeper of the Eastport Lighthouse, a critical navigational aid on the rocky cliffs of Farmarch. He is best known as the unwilling centerpiece of the Cephalopod Trance of 1487 DR, during which he spent an undetermined period with a giant octopus-like parasite attached to his head, luring the fishermen of Eastport toward the sea.

Keeper of the Lighthouse

Prior to the incident, Krensch maintained the lighthouse in respectable obscurity, tending the light that guides vessels through the approaches to Eastport. Neighbors describe him as reliable, solitary, and, in hindsight, "a bit quiet toward the end there" [citation needed].

The Cephalopod Trance

Sleepwalkers at the lighthouse

In 1487 DR, villagers and fishermen of Eastport began walking from their beds in a trance, vacant-eyed and in their nightclothes, toward the crashing waves below the lighthouse. When the adventurers later known as the Heroes of Eastport scaled the tower to investigate, they found Krensch at the lamp with a giant octopus-like parasite seated on his head, projecting a light that offered no safety. Attempts to talk sense into him were only partially successful, owing to the cephalopod.

Rescue and Recovery

The parasite was forcibly removed by the adventurers, ending the trances and freeing both Krensch and the sleepwalkers. The creature's origin, purpose, and connection to the strange lights reported at sea by the Eastport Chronicle remain uninvestigated [citation needed]. Krensch has since returned to his post, and now keeps a hat on.
